5 Essential Things for Beginners in Product Photography
Let's say that you are starting a new
business, it's an online shop. But, after a month, your sales stuck. You did a research, it turns out that the
photos of your product is as clear as people's mind on black friday, it is
blurry, doesn't have a detail, and composed terribly. Not surprising if no one
is buying your fancy dress, it doesn't matter how good it is in reality.
If you can relate to that, I'm here to help
you. Here's 5 essential things that you need to
do a decent product photography. If you are new to this type of photography,
I will tell you, it could be as cheap as you want.Let's go to the number 1, shall we?.
1. Decent camera
This is photography, of course you need a
camera. But this time, I will tell you that you need a decent camera, because a
decent camera usually comes with a better sensor that will produce a better
quality photo.
It does not have to be crazy expensive
though, an entry level camera such as Canon 1300D or Nikon D3300 is usually
more than enough to make a decent photo for your online shop.
2. Get a studio
Intimidated by "studio" word? You
shouldn't.
A lot of people think that studio is a dark
place with strobes and a lot of messy cable, but I can tell you that studio is
basically a place where you can control the light, it's that simple.
Your room is a studio, if you can control
the direction of the light and the intensity of it. You can even make a mini
studio from cardboard boxes, you can find a lot of good tutorials on YouTube,
go check it out.
3. Lighting
"Photo" in photography derived
from the Latin word that means "light".
So in order to make a great photo, you have
to manipulate the light for your advantage.
Make sure your lighting setup is as good as
possible, because it plays a huge part in your photo quality.
But, good doesn't always mean expensive. You can
get a decent flash from third-party companies for a really good price (relatively to the high end, and oftenly overpriced big brands). If you want to get an even
cheaper deal, you can get an LED running light, it's basically a flashlight, but
brighter. Each setup has a pros and cons, so think about that before getting
yourself a lighting setup.
4. Tripod
Tripod is a very essential tool for any
photographer, it is even more important in product photography.
Tripod will help you to make sure that your
camera is as steady as possible, and we all know that a steady camera is a sure
way to get a sharp photo.
It doesn't have to be expensive, but make
sure that it can support your camera, because a wobbly tripod is not a tripod,
it is junk.
5. Editing software
Want to know the difference between an amateur and a professional?
A professional do/don't do things that an
amateur don't do/do.
One thing that a professional do that most
amateur don't do is editing.
Okay, there are some purist out there that
can only appreciate a non-edited photo, but for a professional use, you have to
make sure you add a little touch to your photo, make sure it looks better than
before. Because, if you want to to show your products, make sure it looks the
best. You don't even need a photoshop. VSCO and Snapseed is often times powerful enough to do the editing for your photo. But, if you have the money, invest on professional app such as Photoshop, it's worth it.
